It’s National Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

As temperatures rise across Southeast Texas, so does something many people don’t think about until it’s too late: UV exposure.

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect time for residents across Houston, Beaumont, and surrounding communities to take a closer look at their sun habits and prioritize skin protection.

“In Texas, UV levels begin climbing into the ‘very high’ range as we head into summer,” says Dr. Quinn.
“That means your skin can begin taking damage much faster than most people realize, even during everyday activities.”

Why UV Exposure Matters More Than You Think

Many people associate sun damage with long beach days, but the reality is much more subtle, and more concerning.

Daily exposure adds up through:

  • Driving
  • Walking outdoors
  • Youth sports and activities
  • Yard work or exercise

“You don’t have to get burned to damage your skin,” Dr. Quinn explains.
“Cumulative exposure over time is one of the biggest risk factors we see for skin cancer and premature aging.”

Skin Cancer Is More Common Than You Think

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting millions of people each year.

  • 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70
  • Over 5 million cases are diagnosed annually

The encouraging news? It is also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when caught early.

What to Look For: Early Warning Signs

Dr. Quinn recommends regularly checking your skin and being aware of changes.

Follow the ABCDE rule when evaluating moles:

  • A – Asymmetry
  • B – Border irregularity
  • C – Color variation
  • D – Diameter larger than a pencil eraser
  • E – Evolving or changing appearance

Also watch for:

  • Spots that itch or bleed
  • New growths
  • Areas that don’t heal

“If something looks different or changes over time, it’s worth getting checked,” says Dr. Quinn.

How to Protect Your Skin This Summer

The good news is that protecting your skin doesn’t require a complicated routine, just consistency.

Dr. Quinn recommends:

  • Wearing broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily
  • Reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours outdoors
  • Wearing hats and protective clothing
  • Seeking shade during peak hours (10 AM – 4 PM)
  • Avoiding tanning beds

“The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use,” Dr. Quinn says. “Make it part of your daily routine.”

Why Professional Skin Checks Matter

While at-home awareness is important, a dermatologist can detect subtle changes that are easy to miss.

“We’re trained to identify early warning signs that patients may not notice,” says Dr. Quinn.
“Routine skin exams can truly be life-saving.”
